So far, so good

A man had once been seriously disabled and forced to spend the rest of his days on a disabled chair. On top of that, he got all his senses mixed up, and could rarely perceive the world normally. For example, if he had been in motion, he would know he is in motion, but he wouldn't recognise the direction; upwards, downwards or horizontally, all the same to him.

Now that man happened to live on the tenth floor and have a balcony. He once fell out of that balcony; and, not realising the danger, he simply thought he was somehow moving at a speed he hadn't been able to achieve in years. He was, of course, very happy about it. Only at times he actually realised what was going on, but then after a while this slipped into oblivion and the man kept being happy about his motion. And, as he was falling, faster and faster by the second, next to each window he passed he said to his neighbours, 'So far, so good'.

Motyw z człowiekiem spadającym i mówiącym przy oknach "so far, so good" pochodzi z dowcipu, w którym nie jest tak skomplikowany i nie wymaga niepełnosprawności ani niczego takiego. Przerobiłem ten dowcip na historyjkę ilustrującą stan świadomości człowieka: idziemy sobie przez życie, mijamy kolejne okna - osiągnięcia, etapy życia - mówimy 'so far, so good', i nagle po prostu się to kończy. Śmierć, szlus. A przecież wiedzieliśmy to od początku, nie? Jaki procent czasu człowiek spędza na myśleniu, że po co to wszystko, że przecież kiedyś umrze? Zapewne taki sam, jaki ten niepełnosprawny człowiek spędzał w stanie "normalnej świadomości".

Weźmy jego niepełnosprawność za metaforę naszych normalnych ograniczeń. Człowiek jest niedoskonały, zgoda, ale ja w sumie cieszę się, że jestem ograniczony i nie umiem myśleć o wszystkim naraz i pojmować wszystkiego jednocześnie. Gdybym miał iść przez całe życie z nieustającą świadomością śmierci, pewnie bym zwariował.
